Garments as Social and Political Action
June 15, 2014
As technologies changes so rapidly, I often reflect on how the artifacts might be recycled. Inspired by artist Nancy Judd I begin to consider how I might use a set of old slides.
In addition I started to look at artist that use clothing as the armature. In fashion, different styles and details of textiles and garments, (handmade) indicate a specific personal and group identity. Sewing skills were of great social importance.
“Designers don’t just create consumer products anymore, they have to design the processes that get them to the right person at the right place at the right time in a society that demands immediacy. Clearly, we are going to have to be continually be redesigning this circulatory system that transports goods to fit society’s growing needs.”
In considering the use of old slides I also wanted to consider visual epistemology, to provoke inquiry on the changing discourse of vision and knowledge, and to comment on the role of visual technologies in art, our lives, and visual culture.
