Do You Have a Hat?
Using Eileen Spinelli’s book, Do You Have a Hat?, I developed and co-presented a one-hour afterschool workshop with UF College of Education PhD candidate, Nancy Owen, at Hawthorne Elementary School. The whimsical rhyme book displays famous hats of individuals such as Igor Stravinsky, Carmen Miranda, Abraham Lincoln, Matisse, and Francisco de Goya. The group of afterschool children had fun in exploring historical figures through their hats, including quite a few artists. We then guided students in a creative problem-solving hat making activity. While the hats represented a final art product, the students also built personal and interpersonal skills through the collaborative efforts needed to create the hat foundation.
